Santa Claus Is Coming To Town!

Welcome to the Studio! Thanks so much for stopping by. I am the featured designer today on the Card A Day Blog, and the theme this week is Children & Christmas. When I was a child, one of the highlights of this wonderful season was going to the Lake Forest Mall (New Orleans, La.) and seeing Santa. My mom would dress me up in some adorable outfit, many that she sewed herself, and get my picture taken with Santa. So with thoughts of Santa, warm cookies, and cold milk, here is my card...

The card design is from a sketch, MFTWSC42, by My Favorite Things. Santa himself was stamped with Versamark and heat embossed with detail black embossing powder on watercolor paper (from the art department). I used a set of watercolor pencils that I've had for ages and colored my Santa. Having the heat embossed image helps your color stay inside the lines. I added just a minimal amount of color and shading with the pencils and then went over it with a water brush. The stamp I used is from Mark's Finest Papers. The company has been sold recently and I don't know if they still carry this stamp set. The papers I used are from a Recollections Christmas pad that I found on sale for $9.99. I also used Stampin Up Cherry Cobbler cardstock and CTMH Pear cardstock. For the aqua blue tab, I used a Stampin Up decorative label punch and DCWV mat stack. "Happy Holidays" is from the same set as Santa and it's stamped in CTMH black ink. For my card base, I used the white pre-made card blanks and envelopes for sale at Hobby Lobby and Micheal's. I added a bit of red and white twine and a button just for fun.

And I couldn't make just one...

This time I stamped Santa with Staz-on in jet black on watercolor paper. It worked just as well as heat embossing, but I had to be more careful about staying inside the lines;)

I hope you enjoyed your visit. Until next time, Scrap Sassy!

Celebrate the Season

Welcome to the Studio!

I hope your Thanksgiving holiday was a great one. Here in Alabama, the Iron Bowl is a big football game played right after Thanksgiving. Let me congratulate all the Alabama fans on a big win this year, Roll Tide. For all my Auburn friends...well, there's always next year, War Eagle! Not to pour salt in the wound, but even our dog, Paco, was "dressed" for the Iron Bowl on Saturday. He's got his own Alabama jersey.

Okay. So enough about all the football celebrating, let's get to the real season at hand, Christmas. I was a little short on inspiration when I sat down to work on this card. When I have those "scrapper's blocks," I normally go to a sketch or CASE a card or layout from one of my favorite designers. I visit the Verve blog regularly to check out their card sketches and this was my jumping off point for my card. Here is the sketch...

For my paper and embellishment choice, that was really easy. I used a new pack of paper from Close To My Heart, Wonderland, that was sitting on my desk. I hadn't had a chance to play with it much. I also had some CTMH rhinestone brads in the pack too. I had packed it for a crop recently and just didn't have time to play. The doily is misted with Sassy Shimmer Spritz in Marshmallow. {You can also use Smooch, Glimmer Mist, or make your own like I did.} The stickpin is a new thing I've been experimenting with. I made this one a few weeks ago not knowing what I was going to use it for. I had gotten some beads at a flea market really cheap. The "Celebrate the Season" sentiment is from a stamp set by Flourishes, A Season of Celebrations. I stamped it in Versamark and then embossed it with AC Zing embossing powder in silver. The die I used for the circle is from Spellbinders. I touched up the smaller circles on the diecut with Liquid Pearls in silver.

The sketch is so straightforward, it took no time at all to throw this card together. If you'd like some more sketch inspiration, give these blogs/sites a visit.

What I'm Thankful For...

I just wanted to tell everyone "Happy Thanksgiving" before the day was over. It's been a fun and somewhat hectic day of cooking and eating, cleaning and eating, watching football and eating...well, you can see what my family does best;)

But all kidding aside, I'm thankful for those I love, my faith, my home, my country, my friends. What else can I say but "THANKS BE TO GOD" when I have everything I need and can spend every single day surrounded by those you love.

Have a blessed holiday!

On Donner and Blitzen, MasterCard and Visa!

Welcome to the Studio!

The theme this week on the Card A Day Blog is shopping. And with Black Friday and Cyber Monday fast approaching, we're being assaulted by sale ads. Although my "teenage self" would never believe it, I really don't like to shop. I used to be a "mall rat" even up into my mid-twenties. I seem to have lost the gusto. Last year, my Christmas shopping was accomplished in about 90 minutes online. It would've taken me that long to get a parking spot at Wal-mart.

For my shopping themed project, I thought I'd give you a few ideas for packaging, so I've created a pillowbox and a gift card holder. The pillowbox is great to use with a sweet treat for a co-worker, a small bottle of a friend's fave perfume or lovely piece of jewelry. If you have someone like me to buy for, who loves vintage or antique baubles, those items are mostly found on eBay, Etsy, and in flea markets and usually don't come in a pristine box. This is a great way to show someone how much you care by making packaging with them in mind.

I chose some Scenic Route paper that's been in my stash for years. The red gingham ribbon was in my ribbon bits jar and I kept seeing it and thinking to myself, you know, I really want to use that piece on something. I also found some little pendants at Wal-mart a few years ago after Christmas, so I added a Santa pendant and a poinsettia with Glimmer Mist in Burnt Red and a bit of bling in the middle. The pillow box I cut out with my new Zing. I modified a cut file from Bird's Cards. It's a free download and available in many formats. My modification was the "window" on front. I just cut an oval (but you can use any shape) out of the front and added a piece of transparency on the inside of the box held in place by ScorTape.

Now on to the gift card holder. Everyone gives or gets gift cards every year. {My hubby looks forward to an iTunes card in his stocking every year.} It's great to be able to give that person who has everything something they don't have, it's always the right size, plus they get to pick it out;) However, gift cards can seem a bit impersonal. Fix that by creating a gift card holder just for them. If "Auntie Jean" loves to quilt, a gift card to her favorite fabric store snuggled inside a Christmas "quilt" of its own may be the perfect, thoughtful gift.

My gift card holder is sweet and feminine. I love the pinks and teal greens. It's not the usual Christmas color scheme and that's what I like about it. I used a retired CTMH collection named Jingle. The pleated ribbon is from Hobby Lobby. The chipboard snowflake was inked with CTMH Juniper ink with a coating of Tim Holtz's Rock Candy on top. I used a Juniper button from CTMH and piece of pale pink embroidery floss from my stash. The "Just For You" is from the CTMH December 25th stamp set and was stamped in Juniper ink. I used the Stampin Up word window punch to cut it out.

I learned how to make this unique gift card holder by watching Becca Feeken's video on the Our Daily Bread Designs blog. She is an amazing artist and makes some of the most beautiful cards and projects.

Zing Is In Da House!!!

Welcome to the Studio!

It's an exciting day here. The wait is finally over and my new baby, BaZINGa, has arrived. She's sleek, slim, & silver and cuts so fast it'll make your head spin.

Our Fed Ex guy was really great. He pretended to be as excited as we were. We took his picture as he dropped the box off at the front door. He must have thought we were nuts, certainly.

And yep that's me in the icky purple t-shirt giggling like a fool. My mom is standing in the rain taking the picture.

Here is BaZINGa in her box getting ready to go upstairs to the scraproom.

And here is BaZINGa on the cutting table in her new home. I was really thinking it would take a while to get acclimated, but once I played around with the settings in Make The Cut and got used to the new interface, I was cutting in less than 30 minutes. Most of that time was spent trying trying to get the itty, bitty but very sharp blade into the housing;)

I was able to cut out 34 2.5-inch gingerbread men in less than 3 three minutes. It took me longer to put the paper in the machine than it did to cut. I was totally blown away. With my Cricut Expression, I used to start a project like that cutting and work on something else for 30 to 40 minutes until it finished chugging. Not with my BaZINGa. Some other reasons why I chose the Zing over so many others, Make The Cut software for one, it has a 15-inch wide cutting area and 750g of pressure, which means it cuts through chipboard, decorator fabric, felt, thin metal sheeting, stencil material...and the list goes on. There are also some other accessories like embossing and engraving tips too. I can't wait to explore everything this machine can do. I'll have some sample cuts and some projects up soon.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing in my excitement! I doubt I'll sleep tonight!

Card Patterns Sketch #140

Welcome to the Studio!

I was feeling a little crafty the other day and decided to try a new product on one of my watercolor projects. I've gotten into the whole watercoloring stamped images thing. I've been sitting across from my mom, Joanie's Classy Card Corner, watching her playing with her Copic markers and having a ball creating all these colorful images. I've never been really good with the marker thing. In school, most of my marker artwork looked really streaky and yucky. I thought I would try watercolor pencils and crayons and see what would happen.

I still haven't gotten the whole shading thing yet, but I'm learning slowly but surely. I've had this poppy outline stamp that I've been dying to use for ages, but didn't know what to do with it, so I decided to give it a watercolor treatment. When I finished, I used Ranger's Clear Rock Candy Distress Paint by Tim Holtz. It's clear crackle paint and gives a slightly satin but crackled finish to paper. My friend Joy, Purtty Paperz, used it on some wicked awesome vintage Halloween tags and cards and I just had to try it.

So at this point, I have a watercolored and crackled poppy and nothing to put it on. Kind of like being all dressed up with nowhere to go. I know it's hard to see in the picture, but trust me, it's crackled;) To solve that dilemma, I hopped over to one of my favorite inspiration sites, Card Patterns. I checked out the sketch, found some paper I liked and a few other elements and made this cute card in minutes. I'm going to send it to a friend who needs a little cheering up.

And I must give a quick shout-out to my very smart BFF, Julia, who has a 4.0 average and is tops at her school in reading! She's way above her 4th grade classmates and we're all very proud of her. Oh, and Julia, your box of scrap goodies will be delivered on Monday by a big brown truck, so keep an eye out for it;)

Hope you enjoyed your visit. Until next time, Scrap Sassy!

Mojo Monday Sketch #213

Welcome to the Studio!

I'm recovering nicely from my bout with pneumonia. Thankfully, we caught it early, so no hospital stay, just a bunch of antibiotics, both shots & pills, and some disgusting yellow cough syrup that tastes like sweaty feet. Well, I don't really know what sweaty feet taste like, but if I did, it would taste like this cough syrup. I appreciate you listening to my whining, but on to the fun stuff...

I got a little inspired today and decided to play with the Mojo Monday Sketch #213 and create a vintage-y Christmas card. It took me about 3 hours to pick out paper. Let's just say the icky cough medicine makes me a little loopy too. And of all the paper in my stash, I was intrigued by a few pieces of scraps I found in the purge bag. I'm still stuck on ornaments, so this card is a sort of a variation on a theme.

My card is 5.5x5.5. I used SU Chocolate Chip, cut at 5.25x5.25. The Daisy D's red patterned paper is cut at 5x5. The circles are Spellbinders circle dies. The green cardstock was scraps too. I don't know the color, but I did buy it at Hobby Lobby. SU Real Red was used on the tag and ornament along with CTMH Colonial White. The top layer of the ornament is gold from DCWV. I did a little inking around the edges of everything with SU Chocolate Chip. For my extra touches, I used Glimmer Mist on the poinsettia and leaves (Making Memories), a bit of bling (Want 2 Scrap) , added a seam binding bow, and a "string of pearls" to hang the ornament. The sentiment is Stampin Up.

Hope you enjoyed your visit. Until next time, Scrap Sassy!

An "Ornamental" Christmas Past

Welcome to the Studio!
If you’re visiting from the Card A Day Blog, thanks so much for stopping by and I hope you come back again soon. If you haven’t been to the Card A Day Blog, please stop by over there. There is a bunch of talented ladies doing some awesome creating. I’m so excited to be a part of it.

For this week, the theme is Christmas and Ornaments. I’m back on my vintage kick again, but I wanted to do something easy that could be recreated quickly for those of us who have LOTS of Christmas cards to make and mail out every year.

The card base is 8.5 x 3.75 (8.5 x 7.5 and scored at 3.75) The next layer is Cherry Cobbler cardstock, cut about a quarter of an inch smaller with the bottom edge border punched. It give a little pop of color next to the ivory cardbase. {Hint: Trim the width of the strip first, leaving it longer than 8.5. Border punch the bottom, then measure and trim excess from the top.}
The green pattern paper layer is cut about a quarter inch smaller than the red. I used a cut file from Silhouette for the ornament and cut it out of gold cardstock with an ivory shadow for a little extra pop there too. I glued the green patterned paper to the Cherry Cobbler. I then attached a short piece of Cherry Cobbler seam binding to the back of the Cherry Cobbler cardstock before attaching it to the ivory base. Using the seam binding, I looped it so it would look like a double bow and used a brad to cinch it together. For the sentiment, I used scraps and Spellbinders dies. I stamped “Merry Christmas” first and then cut it out so that I could have the sentiment centered as I wanted it. For attaching the ornament, I found it quicker and easier to run both pieces through my Xyron Sticker Maker (2.5”). I layered the gold on the ivory shadow first and then attached it to the card front and popped the bow on top with a glue dot. The sentiment is on a bit of foam tape as well.

Another tip...use what you have on hand. I have a bunch of Christmas-themed chipboard cutouts that would work great as well. You can also make an ornament, wreath, etc. a bit more elegant with pearls or a lot more eye-catching with bling. I hope you enjoyed your visit!

My Supply List:
Cardstock: Colonial White, CTMH; Cherry Cobbler, Stampin Up; DCWV Gold Pearl.
Patterned paper: Green tone on tone, Anna Griffin.
Stamps: A Merry Christmas, Stampin Up.
Ink: Chocolate, CTMH.
Dies: Spellbinders, scalloped ovals and ovals.
Ribbon: Cherry Cobbler seam binding, Stampin Up.
Bling: Pearl Brad, Paper Studio, Hobby Lobby.
Adhesive: Glue Glider Pro High Tack, Glue Arts; Xyron Sticker Maker; foam tape.
Tools: Border Punch, Martha Stewart.

Winter Wonderland

Welcome to the Studio!

If you’re visiting from the Card A Day Blog, thanks so much for stopping by and I hope you come back again soon. If you haven’t been to the Card A Day Blog, please stop by over there. There is a bunch of talented ladies doing some awesome creating. I’m so excited to be a part of it.

For this week, the theme is Christmas and Snow. When I think of snow, the words to White Christmas come to mind and I get that old-time movie scene in my head of frosted windowpanes, roaring fires, and snowflakes gently drifting by outside. It’s definitely all in my imagination. I grew up in Louisiana, near New Orleans. I remember swimming in the backyard on Christmas Day, and New Year’s for that matter, for more years than I care to count. I also remember standing out on Veterans Highway in Metairie, Louisiana in the pre-dawn darkness freezing my buns off, teeth chattering, dressed in some silly costume (ballerina, Indian, Wonder Woman, etc.) with all-weather coat and gloves too, waiting for the Mardi Gras parade to start in late March. Needless to say, the weather down there is unpredictable at best, but I digress. Let’s get to the good stuff…stamped snowflakes!

I used a past sketch from Mojo Monday for the layout of this card. I used a transparency with Staz-On to stamp the individual snowflake “petals.” The stamps are from Heartfelt Creations as well as the die. The hardest part of this technique was waiting for the ink to dry. After it does, however, the fun begins. Using the Heartfelt/Spellbinder die, you just line up the die over the stamped image. Yes, it sounds hard, but remember that your paper is clear, so it’s super-easy. I ran it through my Bigshot and got ready to play with glitter and bling. I used 3-D Crystal Lacquer (with a fine tip) on the unstamped side of the flakes to “draw” where I wanted the glitter to go. Some sections I filled in with glitter and other sections I just traced some of the swirls. I used MS aquamarine glitter for the bottom layer of flakes and MS white gold glitter for the upper flakes. I attached the flakes together with a foam dot, thus giving it the upper and lower levels. To hide the dimensional, I added a huge chunk of “ice” on top. A Stampin Up “Season’s Greetings” and a silver organza bow finish it off. It was fun to make and looks even better in person…and a lot more sparkly!

My Supply List:
Cardstock: chocolate, CTMH; white, CTMH; Bazzill Bling, Bazzill.
Patterned paper: Brown Polka Dot, K & Co. Christmas Paper Pad
Stamps: Season’s Greetings, Stampin Up; Snowflake Medallions, Heartfelt Creations.
Ink: Chocolate Chip, Stampin Up; Timber Brown, Staz-On.
Dies: Snowflake/Medallions, Spellbinders/Heartfelt Creations; scalloped circles, Spellbinders.
Ribbon: Silver Organza, Offray.
Bling: Jolee’s Boutique
Adhesive: Glue Glider Pro High Tack, Glue Arts; 3-D Crystal Lacquer; foam dots.
Tools: Border Punch, Stampin Up.
Glitter: Aquamarine and white gold, Martha Stewart.

Thanks for stopping by. Until next time, Scrap Sassy!

Christmas Card Double-Header

Welcome to the Studio!

The Card A Day Blog launched its Christmas Card Blog Hop yesterday, and now we're into day two with more crafty goodness. There is still some amazing blog candy up for grabs, including a grand prize that will include something from everyone in the hop. Each of our blog hop designers will choose something new from their stash {or handmade especially for the winner} for this grand prize that will be given away to the random winner of our blog hop challenge.

After that, we will continue by bringing you all types of Christmas cards {and gift card holders too} all the way to just before Christmas. We are doing this to give you lots of ideas for Christmas cards for you to be inspired and get those creative juices flowing in time for this wonderful, and hectic, time of year.

Thank you so much for hopping by for our second day of inspiration! I’m excited to be a part of the CABD Christmas Card Blog Hop. This blog hop is a great big circle, so you can start wherever you want and continue through to see all the fabulous cards. If you would like to start from the beginning, please visit Karen's Blog. Also, at the bottom of this post, you will find a listing of all participants and their blog addresses if you should get lost or want to reference a blog along the way. If you are coming from Janet's Blog, you are on the right track.

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I was cleaning out my Christmas pattern paper scrap bin and I came across my second most favorite CTMH Christmas collection. It too is retired and a few years old. My reasoning, we're all strapped around the holidays. What better way to save money than to use your scraps! Plus, that gives you a little extra to spend on your layouts;)

These are 5x7 cards. Another tip for "bulk" cardmaking is purchasing the card blanks and envelopes together. The chain craft stores all carry them. If they're not on sale, there's usually a coupon for 40-50% off. Where else could get 50 cards for $5? That's a huge savings!

My first card, I used tone-on-tone patterned paper for a soft look. I inked the edges with CTMH Juniper. The "ornament" strip is also inked with Juniper. The tone-on-tone red stripe is inked in CTMH Tulip. The pink rectangle is CTMH Blush cardstock, inked of course, in CTMH Blush. I also used a Sizzix embossing folder for an extra touch of texture. The next layer is CTMH Olive cardstock. I used a Spellbinders scalloped oval to cut it out. You know I inked it;) I used CTMH Olive. The stamp is one of those clearance sets from Michael's from the post-Christmas sales last year. I used chalk ink from SEI for the image on CTMH white cardstock. After stamping it, I used a Spellbinders oval die to cut it out. For a little extra bling, I Liquid Pearls in Petal Pink and Stickles in Fruit Punch and dotted the flower centers and holly berries. I also added three rhinestones and bit of embroidery floss.

For my second card, I decided to cut the base out of Juniper cardstock. I cut a piece of striped pattern paper and glued my ribbon to it before attaching it to my card base. My mom taught me to "hide my ribbon bits." I only attached the ribbon on the back of the pattern paper with ScorTape, leaving the front loose, so I could slide the two strips of pattern paper underneath. The white cardstock strip was added second and sits flush on top of the striped paper. Then the two pattern paper strips were added. I tied a bow and attached it with a glue dot (aka snot dot, booger dot). I used baker's twine in white and hot pink to tie in the buttons for a little extra zing. The button were attached with glue dots. For the sentiment, I diecut Tulip cardstock with Spellbinders scallop oval. I stamped my image on white cardstock and diecut with Spellbinders oval. I also used Stickles and Liquid Pearls just like on the first card. It's hard to see in the photo, but it looks really cool.

My Supply List:
Cardstock: Juniper, CTMH; White, CTMH; Tulip, CTMH; Blush, CTMH.
Patterned paper: Jolly, CTMH.
Stamps: Christmas Clearance at Michael's.
Ink: Juniper, CTMH; Tulip, CTMH; Blush, CTMH; Olive, CTMH; chalk ink, SEI.
Ribbon: embroidery floss; Creme Brulee grosgrain ribbon, CTMH; baker's twine, We R Memory Makers.
Adhesive: Glue Glider Pro High Tack, Glue Arts; ScorTape, ScorPal;
Dimensionals: Fruit Punch Stickles, Ranger; Petal Pink Liquid Pearls, Ranger.
Dies: Scallop oval and oval, Spellbinders.
Embellishments: buttons.

Christmas Card Blog Hop by CADB

If you are coming from Janet's Blog, you are on the right track.

I was cleaning out my Christmas pattern paper scrap bin and found some little strips of striped paper. I love the CTMH Mistletoe line (it's retired, sniff) and I didn't want to let any of it go to waste...and this is what I came up with.

This is just your standard A2 card. When you're making a bunch of cards, like for Christmas, it's a fast and easy size, just cut an 8.5 x 11 piece of cardstock in half lengthwise. Another tip for "bulk" handmade cards is to do them in an assembly-line style. Cut all your bases first, then cut all your pattern paper strips, punch all your border pieces, etc. until you have all the pieces ready to go, then it's just an easy, slap-them-together session that can be done in no time while at a crop or during a scrappy playdate with friends.

For my card, I rounded the edges with a corner rounder and I ALWAYS ink the edges. I don't know what I did with myself before I discovered sponge daubers and ink pads. I used CTMH Topiary and Cranberry for the inking. I embossed the Topiary cardstock with a Cuttlebug embossing folder. I cut the border strip from Cranberry cardstock with a Fiskars border punch. I made sure to attach my crocheted lace to that piece so I could hide the "ribbon bits" behind it. The "Happy Holidays" was heat embossed with CTMH Cocoa embossing powder. That stamp is from a set that came from Oriental Trading.

Now, for the holly. If you've been visiting my blog for any length of time, you've probably realized there's usually something "wonky" with some part of the projects I share. Well, the "wonky" is that I wanted to use these little dew drops that I found on clearance at Michael's a while back. They were REALLY cheap and I bought a BUNCH; however, they did not have any in red. These started out clear. So how did they end up red, you say? I used a standard size hole punch and punched out lots of these little red circles. I then used Diamond Glaze (just a teeny, tiny drop) to attach them to the bottom of the dew drops...and viola, shiny, round holly berries. The holly leaves were really easy. I cut them out using Make the Cut and my Cricut. The shape was downloaded from the Silhouette store, and of course, I inked them;)

My Supply List:

Cardstock: Kraft cardstock, Michaels; Topiary cardstock, CTMH; Cranberry cardstock, CTMH; Garden Green cardstock, CTMH.
Patterned paper: Striped from the Mistletoe Collection, CTMH.
Stamps: Christmas Carols set, Oriental Trading.
Ink: Versamark; Topiary, CTMH; Cranberry, CTMH.
Ribbon: crocheted lace, misc.
Adhesive: Glue Glider Pro High Tack, Glue Arts; ScorTape, ScorPal; Diamond Glaze, Judikins; Fast Grab Tacky Glue, Aleene's.
Embossing powder: Cocoa, CTMH.
Electronic cutter: Cricut Expression, Make The Cut Software (MTC).
Cut files: Holly, Silhouette.
Embellishments: dew drops, Recollections.

Feeling Wicked?

Welcome to the Studio!

If you’re visiting from the Card A Day Blog, thanks so much for stopping by and I hope you come back again soon. If you haven’t been to the Card A Day Blog, please stop by over there. The holidays are getting into full swing over there and there's lots of cool ideas.

For September 25th to 30th, we have a theme to follow, which is Halloween. For me it’s a wonderful time of year. The air gets a chilly nip, the trees are ablaze with color, pumpkin patches and jack-o-lanterns abound.
I’ve been itching to try out some “vintage” style lately. It all started in Nashville at the vendor hall. I kept passing this one booth that had the most awesome paper ever, a new line called Authentique. I’d drool and swoon every time I passed the endcap where the paper was. I was trying to be strong and not break the promise I made to myself before I left home – NO MORE PAPER!

On the last day, minutes before the vendor hall was to close, I snuck out of class early because I just couldn’t stand to leave without this awesome, vintage Halloween and Christmas paper. I sprinted to the vendor hall, went right to the booth to buy the paper. To my utter shock and bafflement, ALL the paper was GONE! There wasn’t a sheet left anywhere in their booth. With a quivering lip, I asked what happened to the pretty paper, I must have some. The show was ending and they had already started packing up. Julie Creek, being the sweet, awesome lady she is, unpacked a huge crate of paper so that I could pick out everything I wanted. We must have spent 20 minutes sitting on the floor digging through paper and chatting about all the scrapbooking gossip as if we’d known each other for years!

If you’d like some of this lovely paper or hundreds of other cool items, please visit Julie at Creek Bank Creations!

And thanks to Julie and Creek Bank Creations, here’s my vintage Halloween card…

Supply List:
Patterned Paper, Authentique, Glowing Collection
Vintage Halloween Postcard, downloaded from internet
Seam binding, crinkled
Pearls, Want 2 Scrap
Glimmer Mist, Black Magic
Martha Stewart border punch
Coredinations cardstock (grey)
Close To My Heart cardstock, Taffy, Ivory and Crème Brulee
CTMH ink in Sunset, Grey Wool, and Black
CTMH Stamp set, Wicked

My card base is 5x7 and made with CTMH ivory cardstock. I inked the edges with Grey Wool ink. I cut the spooky music paper about one-half inch smaller than my base and also inked the edges with Grey Wool and I attached it to my card base. Next I cut the harlequin paper and matted it with crème brulee card stock. I inked the harlequin with Grey Wool and the crème brulee with Sunset. I just kinda “eyeballed” the size, so I can’t give you the exact dimensions. {I do that a lot. Math is not my strong suit, so any time I can “eyeball” something, it’s a good thing.}

Next, I matted the orange spooky handwriting paper with black cardstock. I used a MS border punch to cut my grey cardstock and then sprayed it with Black Magic Glimmer Mist. {The name of that color begs to be used on Halloween projects, huh?} I used an edge distresser to “chew up” the edges of my vintage postcard and then matted it on ivory cardstock inked with Grey Wool ink. For my little banner, I stamped “I’m Feeling Wicked” in black on taffy cardstock and inked it in Sunset ink.

After I had all my pieces ready, I moved them around until I got it just the way I wanted it and I glued everything down. As a finishing touch, I took one of those really big, fancy pearl swirlies and cut it to the size I wanted for my card and stuck it on. I really enjoyed working on this card and I hope you liked it too.

Thanks for stopping by. Until next time, Scrap Sassy!

Birthday Inspiration

Welcome to the Studio!

Saturday the 24th was my birthday and I received a bunch of sweet wishes from lots of friends, both scrappy and non. I just wanted to share some of the lovely cards I received and the inspiration that followed.

Starting in the top right-hand corner, the shabby chic cupcake is from my friend, Joy. She goes to the same aqua-aerobics class that Mom & I do. She refers to us as her "swimmin wimmin." She has some awesome photos of this beautiful card she made for me up on her blog, Purtty Papers. She also has pictures of the cool gatefold thank you card she made for Mom & I as well. She's super-talented and very Cricut/Gypsy savvy.

The next card I want to talk about, bottom right-hand corner, is a sweet little cupcake card from my friend, Stacy. And of course, it's in my FAVORITE COLORS, hot pink and lime green. And I know that under all that yummy pink icing is chocolate! It's absolutely wonderful. Stacy even added Liquid Glass to the cherry. All I can say is YUM!

The card in the bottom left-hand corner is from my BFF, Julia, in Louisiana. She came to visit over the summer and we had a totally scrappy, fantastically fun time together. I miss her bunches!

The last card is from my mother-in-law...it's a cute card about the nutty family I married into...and that's no lie;)

I had such a wonderful birthday and thank all of you for the good wishes and all the love! And the other amaZING thing that happened, my loving (enabling) husband has done the pre-order for the new KNK Zing electronic diecutting machine. It can cut all sorts of materials, chipboard, grunge board, stencil material, fabric, felt...the list goes on. If you're in the market for a new cutter, check out this sweet machine.

Even though it was my birthday, I took some time to make, what else, birthday cards! Here are two cards and a gift bag I was inspired to create...

The card and gift bag set above was for my hubby's boss, Shannon. She's quite the sailing enthusiast. She's also kind of a techie like him, so the iSail t-shirt was a must.

The second card I made is for another of my hubby's co-workers. I used the "For the Record" paper collection by Echo Park. I love the colors! I didn't have any flowers to match, so I had to make some. I used the Posey Patch stamps and dies from Heartfelt Creations. And thanks to Joy, I had the perfect color of seam binding to match too! I like the way it turned out and I hope you liked it too.

Thanks for stopping by! Until next time, Scrap Sassy!

Technique Blog Hop - Multicolor Motif

Welcome to the Studio!

It's Technique Blog Hop time again. This month there are fourteen of us highlighting the Multicolor Motif Technique as shown on page 110 in the Autumn/Winter 2011 Idea Book! This blog hop is a great big circle, so you can start wherever you want and continue through to see all the fabulous artwork incorporating this technique. If you would like to start from the beginning, please visit Debi's Blog.

You will also find a listing of all participants and their blog addresses at the end of this post if you should get lost or want to reference a blog along the way. Let’s get started!

If you are coming from Judy Faye's Blog, you are on the right track!

I love autumn with its crisp chill in the air, the crunch the fallen leaves under your feet, and Halloween. How could a holiday that revolves around costumes and candy be bad? {Notwithstanding the fact that I eat ALL the left over Halloween candy and gain 20 lbs.}
For this fall season, I decided to make a Halloween card showcasing the Multicolor Motif technique. I used both CTMH Sunset ink and Versamark with black embossing powder to create my "Happy Halloween Bat" sentiment.

The easiest way for me to ink my stamp was to turn it over on my scrap desk so that the stamp was facing up. Using the corner of my ink pad, I carefully inked the "Happy Halloween" portion. Then using an embossing pen (or you could use the Versamark refill and a paintbrush) , I "colored" the bat. I huffed and puffed on the stamp a few times and stamped my image. Then I used embossing powder on the bat and heated it.

I used a new technique I just learned to cut out my bat/sentiment. I used a Spellbinders circle die. First, I trimmed the edges of the bat's wings and slid them to the top of the die (the non-cutting side) and centered "Happy Halloween" inside the circle die and ran it through my Bigshot. It didn't cut off the tips of the bat's wings since they were on top of the die and I got a perfect circle too! Cool, huh? Why didn't I think of that sooner?

Supply List: Mischief Workshop Kit, G1029; Beware stamp set, D1381; CTMH Stamp Pads in Grey Wool, Black, Sunset, and Red Barn; Bitty Brads Metal Assortment, pewter, Z1368; Embossing Pen, Z724. {The little "flags" and the "Haunting We Will Go" were zip strips and leftover scraps from the Mischief paper.}

My card was based on a sketch by Becky Fleck. You can visit her site, Pagemaps, to get sketches for layouts and cards too! If you look at this month's edition of Cardmaps, you may just recognize one of the sketches;)

Thanks for stopping by! Please continue onto Melissa's Blog where you will find some additional artwork highlighting this technique! Be sure to leave a comment and let me know what you thought of my variation and happy hopping!

Fall Card

Welcome to the Studio!

This is just a quick post to share a card I finished today. I love fall! It's awesome that the weather is FINALLY cooling of here in central Alabama. I've been playing around with the CTMH Bliss paper pack, using up a few leftovers. That's what I used for this card. I also used CTMH Nature's Vein stamp set for the leaves, one of my faves. The flower is a stamp from Heartfelt Creations, Grande Flora and cut out with Spellbinders Blossom 3. I used it in one of my Nashville classes. I also used an old Hero Arts fall stamp that I've had forever. I did a resist technique on it by heat embossing with clear detail embossing powder on colonial white cardstock and then inking with creme brûlée and chocolate.

Enjoy!

Thanks for stopping by. See you in a few days for the technique blog hop:)

Something To Hoot About!

Welcome to the Studio!

If you’re visiting from the Card A Day Blog, thanks so much for stopping by and I hope you come back again soon. If you haven’t been to the Card A Day Blog, please stop by over there. There is a bunch of very talented ladies doing some awesome creating. I’m so excited to be a part of it.

For this week, we have a theme to follow, which is owls. I adore owls. You’ll get to see my creation, Olivia the Owl, below. We also had an optional sketch to use by one of my all-time favorite sketch/scrapbook artists, Becky Fleck. So how could I resist? I use her sketches all the time for my layouts and just adore her. She’s a sweetie, and oh so talented. You can find her and all her cool sketches for both cards and scrapbook layouts over at Pagemaps.

Here’s the sketch my card was based on…

And here’s my card…

Supply List:
(All products are Close To My Heart unless otherwise noted.)
Cardstock: Colonial White, Crème Brulee, Desert Sand, Cocoa, Sorbet, Olive, Sunset
Inks: Chocolate, Desert Sand, Sorbet, Sunset, Crème Brulee
Patterned Paper: Elemental Collection
Cocoa grosgrain ribbon
Other: White gel pen, Alene’s Fast Grab Tacky Glue, Thank you stamp (Stampin Up),
Tools: Bigshot, Quickutz scalloped border die, Spellbinders scalloped circles, EK Success oak leaf punch, Electronic Diecutting Machine, Make The Cut Software

When I do a project, I like to start by cutting out all my pieces first, laying everything out and glue them down last. That way I can move everything around when I’m adding embellishments, etc.

My card is 6x6 (card base cut at 6x12) out of Colonial White cardstock. I inked the edges in Desert Sand using a sponge dauber. The next layer is Crème Brulee cardstock cut at 5.5 x 5.5. I inked the edges in Chocolate. The patterned paper is from the Elemental Collection. It is cut at 5 1/8 x 5 1/8. I inked the edges in Desert Sand as well. I used Sorbet cardstock cut at 4.5 x 4.5 and inked in chocolate for the last square layer. I again used paper from Elemental to cut out a scalloped border strip. The scalloped circles are cut out of Colonial White and Cocoa cardstock. I left the Colonial White scallop in the die and colored the edges using a sponge dauber and Crème Brulee ink. The die acts as a stencil. I like the extra dimension it adds without any bulk.

I attached the patterned paper to the Crème Brulee cardstock and then the Sorbet cardstock on top of the patterned paper. Then I attached my scalloped strip and ribbon. Fold the ribbon over onto the back of the cardstock to hide those pesky “ribbon bits.”

{NOTE: I have not attached anything to my card base yet.}

I then glued the two scalloped circles together and got ready to put my owl together. She is 14 separate pieces. The bottom layer was cut out in Cocoa and is the entire owl shape, like a shadow. The rest of the pieces were cut out in various colors and inked with chocolate. The branch was cut out in Desert Sand cardstock and I used a woodgrain background stamp and Desert Sand ink to give it a tone-on-tone “woodsy” effect. For the leaves, I went totally old school and used a EK Success punch.

Remember these?!? I still have decorative edge scissors and I use them too!

I used my Xyron sticker maker for most of the owl pieces and put her together just like you would a paper piecing. I attached the branch to the scalloped circles and sat my owl on top. I used Fast Grab Tacky Glue to attach the leaf punches. When it was all together, I put adhesive on the back of the branch and the scalloped circle and attached it to my card front. After I had my entire card front together, I used my glue runner and put glue on my card base and then attached my card front.

Olivia The Owl:
She is a cute little piece of free clipart I found on the internet. Using Make The Cut (MTC) software, I pixel traced the image several times in order to make layers. I was then able to cut her out in several different pieces/colors. The branch is a file from Silhouette.

If you’d like to make your own “Olivia the Owl”, please email me at SassyScrapperAL@gmail.com. I’ll be happy to send the cut file to you in either .mtc (Make The Cut) or .svg (Scalable Vector Graphic). If you need it in another format, let me know and I’ll try to convert it;)

Thanks for stopping by. Until next time, Scrap Sassy!

Technique Blog Hop - Glossy Dimension

Welcome to the Studio!

It's Technique Blog Hop time again! This month there are 13 lucky bloggers highlighting the Glossy Dimension Technique as shown on Page 23 in the Autumn/Winter 2011 Idea Book. How many times have you purchased a product because you thought it was so cool and when you sat down to use it got that doe-in-the-headlights look? It's happened to me MANY times. I hope Liquid Glass (or Glossy Accents or Diamond Glaze) won't be one of those products.

This blog hop is a great big circle, so you can start wherever you want and continue through to see all the fabulous artwork incorporating this technique. If you would like to start from the beginning, please visit Debi's Blog. While there, you will also find a listing of all participants and their blog addresses if you should get lost or want to reference a blog along the way. Let’s get started!

If you are coming from Melissa's Blog, you are on the right track!

Here is a layout I worked on in Nashville. I've been "saving" my wings paper for the perfect layout and this was the one. What's a better way to show-off a fluttering Christmas light display than with this beautiful butterfly paper. The photos were taken at Bellingrath Gardens Magic Christmas in Lights.

I chose to use Liquid Glass on my title and to accent my diecut butterfly. It's like using a marker and coloring (And yes, you have to stay in the lines). Using the fine tip applicator, I just "traced" my letters and the detail top layer of my butterfly. Here's a close-up. You can see the shine on the letters and black area of the butterfly's wings. Now, did you know that Liquid Glass is a great adhesive for glitter (especially the glass glitter) and microbeads? Wanna stir things up? Put a few drops of Liquid Glass in a small container and mix in some Pearl Ex or Perfect Pearls to give your project a glossy, pearl-like finish. The possibilities are endless!

Supply List: Wings WOTG, Liquid Glass, colonial white buttons, CTMH Black Stamp pad, Cricut Expression, Make The Cut software, Quickutz/Lifestyle Crafts, border punches (EK Success and Fiskars), glitter (PK Glitz).

Plans of Mice and Men...

I'm back in the Studio again. I had everything all set and ready to go so I could blog while in Nashville, post pictures, and keep everyone in the center of the action. NOT! Thanks to a wi-fi snafu, I could get and send emails but that's about it. Blogsy, my iPad app, gave about thirty error messages I had never seen before and couldn't update the blog.

So, without further adieu, here's the "missing posts."

We arrived in Nashville on Thursday afternoon, took a quick tour of our surroundings, and headed to the CKC check-in to get our tickets. Here are some photos of the hotel. It is HUGE and absolutely beautiful. This was my second time visiting the Gaylord Opryland Resort and it still took my breath away.

The food court and shopping area.

The stained glass portico in the lobby that greeted us on check-in.

One of the many water features.

Since we had arrived early enough, Mom and I decided to take the Thursday Night Technique Workshop. It was three solid, fast-paced hours of new techniques. We did so many layouts, I lost count! My favorite techniques were the crepe paper flowers, a glass pendant, and a really cool (and simple) piercing technique, which I intend to share with all of you.

Mom and our new friend, Carol, at the Thursday workshop.

We got back to the room and crashed for the night. I wish I could say I slept. I kept waking up every few hours and looking at the clock to see if it was time to get up yet.

My second day began in the vendor faire at 9:00 a.m. I made a quick trip in to a few booths that were on the top of my shopping list, Nicole Peterson Designs (awesome vintage findings and kits)and to Purple Daisy Designs to pick up some scrappy apparel, then it was off to my first class, In Bloom. I really enjoyed all my classes and got some uber hauls. We'll have show in tell as soon as I can photograph everything;)

Here are some shots of the vendor faire...

I don't want to give y'all sensory overload. I'll be following up soon with pictures of class projects, purchases, new techniques, and some finished layouts! And I'll be sharing some of my favorite vendors (and their websites) so you can get all the cool stuff for yourself.

Until next time, Scrap Sassy!

This Is Only A Test

Welcome to the Studio!

In anticipation of our CKC-Nashville trip, I wanted to make sure I could update my blog, including pictures, from my iPad. I'm planning on keeping everyone in the loop, so even if you couldn't make it this year, you'll feel like you're there!

Here is a quick, little fall decoration I made last year. It's your average dollar store candle, just dressed up. Using my Silhouette, I cut "Give Thanks" in brown vinyl and added it to the candle. If it doesn't go on straight, don't fret. The wax is quite forgiving. You can scoot it around and get it in place. I glued some silk leaves and a sunflower together with glue dots and using a short stickpin, attached it to the candle. I love fall and I'm looking forward to the cool weather. I am quite tired of this summer heat.

My next post will be on Thursday when we hit the road...CKC or Bust!!!

A Visit From My BFF

Hello again and welcome to the Studio!

I want to send a quick shout-out the newest member of scrapbook royalty, Julia. She is my friend's daughter {and my BFF} and she scrapped for the very first time this week. She made a mini album of her visit. Here are some pictures of "The Scrap Queen" and her project...

All I did was cut things out and print pictures. Ms. J did the rest. She loves using daubers to distress the edges of her pages and is quite talented with them!

I snapped of picture of the train coming into the station in Birmingham. The paper she chose was Scenic Route. The bluejean pocket, with rhinestones of course, was all Julia. She had fun playing with the iRock. This is the first page she "daubered."

This is a sweet picture of Julia and her grandmother, Lena, who happens to be my Mom's BFF. Julia enjoyed adding Stickles to the scallop trim and picked out a Sassy original flower in muslin & denim to match her bluejean pocket.

Our first stop was at the McWane Science Center. We had fun making handprints in the neat peg-board thingy. We had a LOT of fun playing with it. And our hands are almost the same size!

It's hard to see from the photo, but the little red hands are on pop dots and embossed with Swiss Dots to mimic the dottie-ness of the pegs.
Julia had a blast digging in the dino excavation pit. We both enjoyed the Sea Monster exhibit with the huge, icky prehistoric fish.

Our favorite was World of Water and seeing all the pretty fish. We also got to pet baby bonnethead sharks, but don't look for any photos of that event. This big dummy was having so much fun petting them that I forgot to take a picture. I can't help it...I just love to pet things.

Julia chose the titles for these pages...Finding Nemo And Jelly-fishing.
The title here is: A Sea-riffic View. She's so witty! And did I mention she's only nine?

Julia really enjoyed making "Waves of Stickles" for the borders on these pages. On the first page, she is riding a huge, fiberglass big mouth bass. Here caption reads, "Who's fish food now..."

Here, Julia is pretending to be eaten by the same big mouth bass. Her caption, "Apparently, Me!" This is probably my most favorite captions of the whole album. I laughed 'til I cried when she came up with this one.

It's been a ritual for as long as I can remember that when Lena comes to visit, I always fix strawberry crepes for breakfast one morning. It seems to be a "new tradition" for Ms. Julia too. She really enjoyed pigging out on the whipped cream covered crepes. There's even a note in my cookbook that when Julia visits, make a triple batch of crepes:)

These are probably my two most favorite pages in the album because they just girly-girl and precious. It captures her personality perfectly. Glimmer Mist was used in the making of this album...and LOTS of it. Unfortunately for Jayne, Julia's Mom, most of it is on Julia! When we ate breakfast this morning, Julia still had glittery, glimmery sparkle everywhere, even after two baths.

She adores animals and wants to be a vet when she grows up. Our three dogs are so going to miss her. They haven't been petted and played with that much ever! This page is probably Julia's favorite because of the caption..."If the collar fits, wear it." We were able to find the cutest little collar embie in my stash to coordinate.

She needed room for journaling. Julia loves to read, so she chose to use a book diecut for her journaling.

And what's a Scrap Queen without a crown?

I had a fantastic time with my new scrapping buddy. I can't wait for Julia to visit us again. She did an awesome job on her album (and the three cards she made too). Thanks, Jayne, for sharing your little princess with me. I'm returning her a Scrap Queen!

Until next time, find inspiration everywhere and Scrap Sassy!
